Dr. John Dougherty III, DO, MS
Dr. Dougherty is a board-certified psychiatrist based in the Philadelphia area. He specializes in the treatment of psychiatric disorders including treatment-resistant depression as well as substance use disorders. Dr. Dougherty has extensive experience treating patients with traumatic brain injuries as well as establishing relationships with athletes on varying levels of competition and he is very comfortable treating medically complicated patients.
Dr. Dougherty stresses the importance of the minimalization of medications when possible and strives to help athletes treat their underlying mood or anxiety disorders without affecting their overall performance. He enjoys working with them and their families to help them continue to thrive in their particular sports.
Dr. Dougherty completed his psychiatric training at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Prior to that, he completed a family medicine residency at Bryn Mawr Hospital where he received the resident mental health award. Dr. Dougherty also has a master's degree in genetics from Thomas Jefferson University. He went to Philadelphia College of Osteopathic medicine for medical school and completed his undergraduate work at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.
Dr. Dougherty is a member of the International Society of Sports Psychiatry (ISSP), as well as the American Society of Ketamine Physicians (ASKP). He is also currently a part-time faculty member at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He continues to collaborate with colleagues to promote the literature in the TBI and sports psychiatry fields.
