Tips for Overcoming Anxiety Naturally
Everyone experiences anxiety at some point. Anxiety is the body’s natural response to stressful situations. Stress is brought on by triggers, or things that activate the stress. Triggers can be meeting new people, taking tests, or starting a new job, etc. It is important to understand what your triggers are to get a better understanding of how to combat anxiety that will follows an incident.
Tips to Combat Anxiety
Once you realize you have been triggered, there are tasks you can do to calm your anxiety. For instance, if you realize your thought pattern is typically negative, taking a few moments to analyze the basis of these thoughts can begin your coping with stress journey. After understanding the origins of the thought process, you can work on changing them and being more positive. Another strategy is to exercise. Exercise is a great way to deter focus from your triggers and be productive. Exercise releases endorphins, which are known to reduce stress levels. If you feel yourself getting worked up, take a power walk, this activity can both increase endorphin levels and give you time to analyze your thought patterns.
If you’re in an environment where you cannot dismiss yourself and walk away, try taking some deep breaths. Typically, stressful situations cause your heart rate to increase as a natural way for you body to warn you of potential danger. Taking deep breaths slow the heart rate, putting you in a calmer state. When you are at home preparing for bed, take fifteen minutes to meditate before bed. Taking time to calm down and release the stresses of the day is great for getting a good night’s rest. The same works when waking up. Getting on a positive vibration starting your day with meditation sets the pace for a productive day.
A coping with stress mechanism many people underestimate is writing. Similar to thinking about possible triggers, writing down how you feel and rereading what you wrote may reveal some subconscious triggers that otherwise wouldn’t have been revealed. Writing also allows you to document stressful daily situations and will eventually allow you to combat anxiety that you’ve written about.
If your anxiety is very severe, look at your home. Oftentimes, a physical manifestation of your mental state is how your living arrangements look. Take time to declutter your living space and it will help tremendously. If you find yourself reorganizing your clutter constantly, you can try separating it into three categories: keep, donate, and throw away. This way, you can analyze what you truly need and you can keep your space, and mind, clear.
Stress triggers can also be an indication of what’s going into your body. Many people are unaware that the foods you eat can affect anxiety levels. For example, caffeinated beverages like coffee and soda contribute to rising up your central nervous center, making you jittery. Instead of drinking soda and caffeinated drinks, try supplementing for herbal teas. Chamomile and lavender teas, for example, are great for relaxing you and relieving stress. They are also great sleep aids. Incorporating healthier foods containing omega-3 fatty foods like salmon, chia seeds, broccoli, and eggs. Dark chocolate is also a sweet way to reduce anxiety.
After trying those tips and still needing something else, consider getting a pet. Pets are great for giving love, are loyal, and taking care of them helps relieve stress. For example, studies have shown people who groom and are around horses and dogs help maintain stress levels.
